They conveniently forget that long ago all the galaxies and this very planet were brought into existence out of watery chaos by God’s word. 2 Peter 3:5 - Additional Comments

This is how Peter responds to the scoffers.
1. (verses 5-6 They claimed there was nothing new since creation, but Peter responds with a reminder of the heavens created by a word from God. And then he reminds of the destruction during the days of Noah. Both of these are very dramatic, and show that things haven't stayed the same.
2. (verse 8) Nothing has changed (as the scoffers claim, vs 4) because it has not been in God's timing. The scoffers are impatient to see something happening. But God's sense of time is different than that of humans. As we don't think much of the length of a day, God trivializes a thousand years. See also Psalm 90:4.
3. (verse 9) God is patient, suffering long, enduing the scoffing, because he wishes for all to come to repentance, even the scoffers. If He hastened the second coming, many would lose out. How ironic that the scoffers scoff at God's timing, yet the reason for God's timing is their benefit! Yet, we are encouraged (vs 12-13) to look for and to hasten His coming. How do we hasten His coming? verse 11 - by conducting ourselves in holy conduct and godliness. Does this say we can affect the timing of His coming? If so, this implies when we sin we my affect a delay in the timing of His coming. Or, it may simply say we are to hurry towards His coming by our obedience - we cannot speed time up, but we can by obedience speed up our perception of time passing.
