David sent to ask about her, and was told, "Isn’t this Bathsheba, daughter of Eliam and wife of Uriah the Hittite?" David sent his agents to get her. After she arrived, he went to bed with her. (This occurred during the time of "purification" following her period.) Then she returned home. Before long she realized she was pregnant.    Later she sent word to David: "I’m pregnant."

2 Samuel 11:2 - Additional Comments

David was restless, possibly feeling guilt for not being where he should have been, in the battle.
Normally we need to run from temptation (Prov 4:14-15, 2 Tim 2:22, 1 Cor 6:18), running to the Lord for safety (Prov 18:10), but here it jumped out without warning. The process described in James (James 1:14-15) was followed here. David had his internal desires, already existent in him. Then, when presented with temptation, those desires kicked in, and sin resulted, and therefore death, which is what he deserved outside of God's redemption (Rom 6:23).
Do you think David may have suspected he might have the opportunity to find someone bathing? Do you ever play with fire, in a seemingly harmless situation, but you know there is a chance you might run into a situation that you shouldn't get into? (E.g. being alone with your date, turning on late night TV, exploring certain web sites, going to certain places like the beach, night clubs, fitness centers, certain restaurants, grocery stores, places where you know you'll see a specific person, etc. - these things appear innocent, but you know you might find something that will cause you trouble. Like it says in James 1:14-15, there will be temptation and desire before sin. Your desire is already there, and when the temptation "jumps" out at you "unexpectedly", you have conception, then sin, then death.
Look at what happened once David gave in to a sin. It led to other sins - it snowballed out of control. Have you ever found yourself in that situation? Have you ever lied to hide a sin, and thereby add sin onto sin? Remember a lie is not what you say, but how you deceive - Bill Clinton may feel that he technically did not lie, but he certainly deceived, and therefore in God's eyes it was a lie.
