Dr. Randy Pausch was a professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). He achieved worldwide fame for his "The Last Lecture" speech at CMU. In summer 2007, Pausch conceived the lecture after he learned that his previously known pancreatic cancer was terminal. He died in July, 2008.
Pausch delivered his "Last Lecture", titled "Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams", at CMU on September 18, 2007. This talk was modeled after an ongoing series of lectures where top academics are asked to think deeply about what matters to them, and then give a hypothetical "final talk," i.e., "what wisdom would you try to impart to the world if you knew it was your last chance?"
During the lecture, Pausch was upbeat and humorous, alternating between wisecracks, insights on computer science and engineering education, advice on building multi-disciplinary collaborations, working in groups and interacting with other people, offering inspirational life lessons, and performing push-ups on stage.
Pausch talked about what he would not cover in the lecture, which included his family and children, religion, spirituality, and his terminal cancer or any other cancer.
Pausch explained his childhood dreams and how he accomplished (or tried to accomplish) them. After explaining his childhood dreams, Pausch then began the second part of his speech, which was about how he enabled the dreams of others.
This speech by Paul was in a sense a last lecture, for it was the last time he would be speaking to those from the church at Ephesus, surely one of the churches he was closest to, having spent 3 years there.
So, we read here (vss 18-35) what Paul said in his last lecture to the Ephesians. How sad that Randy Pausch did not have anything to say that would last in eternity. What would you say in your last lecture?
This is the only recorded speech of Paul's to Christians. What did Paul talk about? He talked about his time with the Ephesians, what was ahead for him (especially the trials), how he has run the race, and tells them what to beware of. He tells them to remember the words of Christ, and he commends them to God and His word.
