What we find in this passage is Paul looking back over his life, seeing a spiritual progression from darkness into the great prophet he had become. We see Paul describing the significant events that shaped his life. We see that for Paul, these events enhanced who he was becoming for God, not hindering him. He did not hold onto the past in a way that kept him from moving forward into the future.
When you think of the significant events of your past, what are the first few things that come to mind? Are these uplifting things, or do they weigh you down? Are there difficult events that you have a hard time leaving behind? Is a lack of forgiveness of past wrongs preventing you from becoming who God wants you to be? Are they distracting you from having a fulfilling life with God?
Eph 4:31-32 says we are to put bitterness away from us, and forgive others in the same way Christ forgave us. Christ was tempted in all ways as we are (Heb 4:15), yet did not sin - and this includes the temptation to become bitter at those who cause you harm.
As Paul is looking back over his life here, he's completed his 3 missionary journeys, and is about to take his final journey, to Rome. Paul was able to look back at this life, seeing regular obedience to what God wanted him to do. What a terrible thing it would have been to look back with regrets for not doing what God asked! But we have a choice now to avoid these regrets, by listening to Him and obeying.
