Amos 5:10 - The Message

People hate this kind of talk.
   Raw truth is never popular.
But here it is, bluntly spoken:
Because you run roughshod over the poor
and take the bread right out of their mouths,
You’re never going to move into
the luxury homes you have built.
You’re never going to drink wine
from the expensive vineyards you’ve planted.
I know precisely the extent of your violations,
the enormity of your sins. Appalling!
You bully right-living people,
taking bribes right and left and kicking the poor when they’re down.

Amos 5:10 - New American Standard Bible

They hate him who reproves in the gate, And they abhor him who speaks {with} integrity.

Amos 5:10 - Nueva Biblia Latinoamericana de Hoy

Ellos odian en la puerta (de la ciudad) al que reprende,
Y aborrecen al que habla con integridad.

Amos 5:10 - Young's Living Translation

They have hated a reprover in the gate, And a plain speaker they abominate.

Amos 5:10 - Additional Comments

Instead of humbly acknowledging their wrong before God, they hate the one who brings the message.
Is it virtually impossible for someone to reprove you individually, without you being defensive, ignoring the message, making no effort to change, or raising anger against the one who brought the word? Are you one that this verse speaks to? Or do you ask like the psalmist, "Search me O God..." (Psalm 139:23-24). Do you ever truly ask God to show you what He would like to change in you, and then try by the power of the Holy Spirit to change?
