Translations

Colossians 3:5 - Amplified Bible

So kill (deaden, deprive of power) the evil desire lurking in your members [those animal impulses and all that is earthly in you that is employed in sin]: sexual vice, impurity, sensual appetites, unholy desires, and all greed {and} covetousness, for that is idolatry (the deifying of self and other created things instead of God).

Colossians 3:5 - American Standard Version

Colossians 3:5 - La Biblia de las Americas

Por tanto, considerad los miembros de vuestro cuerpo terrenal como muertos a la fornicaciòn, la impureza, las pasiones, los malos deseos y la avaricia, que es idolatrìa.

Colossians 3:5 - The Message

And that means killing off everything connected with that way of death: sexual promiscuity, impurity, lust, doing whatever you feel like whenever you feel like it, and grabbing whatever attracts your fancy. That’s a life shaped by things and feelings instead of by God. It’s because of this kind of thing that God is about to explode in anger. It wasn’t long ago that you were doing all that stuff and not knowing any better. But you know better now, so make sure it’s all gone for good: bad temper, irritability, meanness, profanity, dirty talk.

Colossians 3:5 - New American Standard Bible

Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.

Colossians 3:5 - World English Bible

Put to death therefore your members which are on the earth: sexual immorality, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry;

Colossians 3:5 - Young's Living Translation

Put to death, then, your members that [are] upon the earth -- whoredom, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and the covetousness, which is idolatry --

Colossians 3:5 - Additional Comments

Since we have died to self, to the old way of life, here is the challenge - not to live like the old life.
So, what is it that we are to exclude from our life, to put behind us?
- fornication (the word includes harlotry and adultery) - inappropriate physical relations; the desire for the same (Matt 5:27-28)
- uncleanness (physical or moral impurity) - getting drawn into inappropriate activities, usually sexual
- passion - strong sexual desire, nowadays fueled by inappropriate images or people that dress to draw our passion
- evil desire - a longing for depraved, injurious, harmful things
- covetousness - greedy, even with possibly cheating and fraud to get what you want; unhealthy desire for things or money
- idolatry - simply giving anything a higher priority than God (tell me the things you love, and then tell me how it compares to God)
These are the things that anger God, that draw His wrath! (vs 6) and, they draw His punishment for them.
These things were a common part of your life before God (vs 7), but now we need to put them behind, as we have died to these things.
