Daniel 1:2 - Additional Comments

At this time, in the first year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, he successfully laid seige against Jerusalem. He left Jehoiakim to reign as tributary to him. This was the first of the removal of Jews from Judah into captivity. 8 years later, Jehoiakim rebelled, but was unsuccessful, and was killed. 2 other kings followed him, before the job of carrying Judah away was completed, Jehoiachin for 3 months, and Zedekiah, for 11 years.
As one writer observes, the timeframe of events:
-- Israel's freedom from Egypt
-- 40 years later, they entered Canaan
-- 7 years it took to divide the new land of Israel
-- 7 Jubilees (7 x 49 years) to the first year of Samuel, in whom prophecy began
-- 10 Jubilees (490 years) to the first year of the captivity
-- 70 years to the return from captivity (Most believe this 70 years started from this first seige and captivity, not when the captivity was completed, 19 years later. During the 70 years all nations served Nebuchadnezzar, and his son, and his sonon, Jer. 25:11. After this, King Cyrus, who founded the Persian Empire, took over the decaying Babylonian Empire. At that time he sent home the people who had been deported from their homelands. Daniel lived in Babylon until the reign of King Cyrus, verse 21. Some Jews stayed in Babyon, since Ezra and Nehemiah lived there, about 100 years after Daniel, until they returned to Jerusalem.)
-- 490 (7 x 70) years to the death of Christ
-- 40 years to the destruction of Jerusalem
