Ephesians 6:11 - Additional Comments

What is the purpose for putting on the armor of God? To resist the clever schemes of the devil. The devil is focused and actively making plans on how to damage us, defeat us, destroy us. (See "Screwtape Letters" by CS Lewis.)
-- (defense) The helmet protects the brain, which is controls the mind and all activity. All other protection is useless unless the brain is protected. Eph 6:17 compares it to salvation. Unless we have salvation, the battle is lost.
-- (defense) The breastplate protects the heart, which keeps the body clean and pure. Eph 6:14 compares it to righteousness. By living with uncompromising righteousness (purity), we are strong, and can defend against attacks.
-- (defense) The belt of armor protects the internal organs, which keep the body functioning, healthy. Eph 6:14 compares it to truth. When holding to the truth we have from God, all things function properly. Without it, we are in turmoil.
-- (defense) The shield is broad, and protects against projectiles. It can protect any area of the body. Eph 6:16 compares it to faith. A strong faith in God and confidence in Him can protect against the flaming arrows of the devil (Eph 6:16).
-- (defense/offense) The shoes protect the feet so the soldier can travel and be mobile. The enables the soldier to be able to attack and defeat the enemy. Eph 6:15 compares it to the preparation of the gospel. Being able to share defeats the enemy.
-- (offense) The sword enables the soldier to attack and destroy. Eph 6:17 calls it the sword of the Spirit, and compares it to the Word of God. The Word is powerful and sharp (Heb 4:12). It can directly be used to defeat any spiritual attacks, and to take the offensive to accomplish the goals of God.
Rom 13:12 says to cast off the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light. "Armor" in this verse is a different Greek word than in Ephesians. Armor in Ephesians is primarily protective gear, but In Romans it refers to a weapon (or tool) - an offensive weapon. Works of righteousness are an offensive weapon to defeat the devil.
1 Thess 5:8 says to put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.
