For what reasons did they give? Probably many reasons - out of duty, obligation, as an act of worship, to help the Hebrew nation, just since Moses asked for it and he was their leader, etc. But most of all, probably, because it was a cause they believed in. It is difficult to ask for donations for something if the people don't believe in it, but it is easy if the people believe in it. For example, gift for Desert Storm, gifts to help those affected by the tsunami, and those affected by the earthquake in Haiti.
