Genesis 1:26 - The Message
God spoke: "Let us make human beings in our image, make them
reflecting our nature
So they can be responsible for the fish in the sea,
the birds in the air, the cattle,
And, yes, Earth itself,
and every animal that moves on the face of Earth."
God created human beings;
he created them godlike,
Reflecting Gods nature.
He created them male and female.
God blessed them:
"Prosper! Reproduce! Fill Earth! Take charge!
Be responsible for fish in the sea and birds in the air,
for every living thing that moves on the face of Earth."

Genesis 1:26 - Additional Comments
See also Gen 5:1 and 9:6. The terms "image" and "likeness" appear to be interchangeable, implying here that "image" means the likeness of God has an abstract meaning of similarity, rather than like God in physical appearance. Here, this similarity connects with the dominion over the rest of creation. Gen 9:1-7 also implies likeness in the same way, as having dominion over the rest of creation. Sin certainly disfigured that likeness, but it still existed after the flood (Gen 9:1-7). This likeness of God also includes being able to relate and communicate with God, which distinguishes us from the rest of creation.
See the note on John 1:1 in reference to this verse.
