Hosea 14:1 - Additional Comments

The chapter differs from the rest of the book, which focused on Israel's sin and the resultant penalties. This chapter is made up of the request for repentance and the resultant mercy. The previous reproofs and terrors were given to pave the way to the restoration available here. God is willing to wound the body that He may restore the relationship.
This chapter starts out with directions for repenting, then encouragements to repent, blessings from repentance, and encouragement to seriously consider these words.
Who is Hosea writing to? To Israel, which is effectively the church. Note that we should encourage repentance from both those outside the church as well as those inside the church. This means we should recognize the depth and blackness of our sin and repent of it. Only when we see the depths of the blackness of our sin can we truly understand the amazing depths of the richness of God's mercy.
This verse tells us of the trials that Israel has had to face, but what is the reason? Here it says because of their sin, their iniquity. Really this means their iniquity without repentance. We all have a gross pile of sins, but the critical sin is the sin of forgetting about God and going after idols.
Note also that Israel once had a good relationship with God. God is asking them to return to Him, implying they were once there. They had tasted of the goodness of a good relationship with God and let it go away.
May each of us be making the effort, so that our relationship with God is getting to where He wants it rather than where we will "stumble because of our iniquity", where we will pay the consequences of ignoring God.
