Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the Chaldeans, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he shall take it:

The Chaldeans were in the earliest times merely one out of many Cushite tribes inhabiting the great plain known later as Chaldea or Babylonia. They were from the southern portion of the Babylonian country. Over time, the Kaldi grew in power, and their name gradually prevailed over those of the other tribes inhabiting the country. By the era of the Jewish captivity it had begun to be used generally for all the inhabitants of Babylonia.
In Babylon, the Chaldeans were the learned class; they were priests, magicians or astronomers, and they probably had discoveries of great importance. In later times they degenerated into mere fortune-tellers.
Nebuchadnezzar, as were several Babylonian kings before him, was a Chaldean.
