John declares the central purpose for Jesus - to take away the sins of the world. This would not be understood until much later, even after His death and resurrection. Some, like Peter, knew Jesus was the Christ (John 6:69), but did not really understood what that meant until much later. This must have been divinely inspired in John for Him to know this.
The Muslim faith is based on the teachings of Mohammed, Buddhism is based on the teachings Buddha, and Confucianism on the teachings of Confucius. Christianity is not founded on what Jesus taught (this distinction is vital to grasp) but on who Jesus is and on what Jesus accomplished. His teachings help us to understand these things.
And Jesus alone is able to take away our sins - see John 3:17, John 6:51, Acts 4:12, John 14:6, John 11:25-26.
John was inspired and prophetic in the names he used for Jesus. John referred to Jesus as the Lamb of God (vs 36), comparing Him to the Passover Lamb that was slain for sins, with out knowing Jesus would be sacrificed for our sins (see Heb 10:4-12). And, the Son of God (vs 34), without knowing about the concept of God the Father, God the Son. And the Lord (vs 23), the One to be obeyed, the One who is king (Rev 19:13,16), but not the kind of king they were expecting.
