This story starts out not with Lazarus's death, but with that he was sick.
Bethany was a small town less than two miles from Jerusalem, just southeast of the city.
Note that Mary was the one honored, for it was the town of Mary, and Martha was merely listed as her sister. Why? Mary was the one who honored Jesus. See verse 2.
