The next day the huge crowd that had arrived for the Feast heard that Jesus was entering Jerusalem. They broke off palm branches and went out to meet him. And they cheered: Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in God’s name! Yes! The King of Israel!
Jesus got a young donkey and rode it, just as the Scripture has it:

"The next day" - the day after Jesus had been to Bethany to visit Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, and when Mary poured the expensive perfume on Jesus (to anoint him for burial, even though she didn't realize it).
"The feast" - the Passover feast. This was the most important date on the Jewish calendar, as Easter is today for Christians. Both holidays signify freedom from bondage. Little did they know that Jesus was going to become, at this Passover, the Passover Lamb for all eternity, who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29, Rom 5:9, 1 Thess 5:9-10).
Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem is the beginning of the main events of why Jesus came to earth (see vs 12:23). This is the transition point of His life, from focused on teaching to focused on getting done what needs to get done (vs 12:27) - His crucifixion and resurrection.
The people came from all around, and many of those who were not residents of Jerusalem came to see Jesus.
In those days, the nearer people were to the temple of the Lord, the further from the Lord of the temple they were.
They came to Jesus with many different ideas of who He was (Matt 16:13-14). Can you imagine the wild speculation among the peoples about Jesus? Jesus had worked in small towns and with relatively small groups of people (well, on occasion they numbered in the thousands), but never before had there been this kind of event. Jesus had had His teachings and activities like healings for 3 years, but now was the Grand Entry into Jerusalem. He came as the King about to be crowned, as identified by His entry on a donkey, the customary ride of those who are about to be crowned. The people of Jerusalem were in a frenzy, looking forward to Jesus taking the throne. The interesting twist is that He really was about to become crowned King, although in a manner nothing like anyone expected!
The Jewish leaders were so upset already at Jesus, and now so much more, with His entry into Jerusalem as a king (vs 12:19).
