John 4:4 - Additional Comments

Jesus traveled through Samaria -
- This was not customary in the Jewish culture. (See comments on verse 9.) Most Jews, to avoid the Samaritans, traveled through Perea & Decapolis, on the east side of the Jordan River, to get to Galilee. Samaria was on the west side of the Jordan River.
- Jesus did this, from the divine perspective, to bring Samaritans to faith.
- From the human perspective, it was the shortest & most sensible route.
- 1 Cor 5:9-13 says we cannot or should not avoid sinners. We are to go into the world, but not be of the world.
- Racial prejudice & bigotry were never a consideration with Jesus. He came to be the Savior to both the Jews and the Gentiles.
The journey was hot & dusty, about 30 miles. Jesus was tired, thirsty, & hungry. It's probably about 6 pm (see vs 6) when He meets the Samaritan woman at the well.
Here Jesus is about to encounter racial, cultural, and theological barriers.
Later, in Luke 9:51-56, the Samaritans of a certain Samaritan village refused to allow Jesus to enter their village.
