John 4:53 - Additional Comments

The father came to Jesus, believing that Jesus could heal his son (verse 47). Then (verse 50), he believed when Jesus said his son was healed. Then, in this verse, he believes. His belief and faith progressed as he saw more of Jesus.
o This is the way faith is, it should grow deeper. Look at the disciples in the Gospels. In John 1, several disciples come to believe in Jesus as the promised Messiah. Then they observe the Lord changing water into wine, and we are once again told that they believe in Jesus (John 2:11). Throughout the life of our Lord, more and more miracles are performed as the disciples witness them. And the more they see of Him, the more their faith in Him grows. Faith is not a static thing, something we experience once and then it remains constant. Our faith should grow as we come to know our Lord and His Word better, and as we see Him continue to act for us.
o What a blessed change took place here in this house, brought about by the sickness of the child! This should enlighten us to our afflictions; not knowing what good may follow from them, but knowing that God will work to our good through them. Can you react as Job did, praising God in all things? (Job 1:20-21, 1 Thess 5:16-18)
o Wow. Once the father believed, the whole household believed. We see this again in Acts 16:27-34, with Paul and the jailer and his household. Are you the leader in your house? Does your family follow and trust you enough that they will follow your belief?
