John 5:38 - Additional Comments

(Verses 38-39) Amazing. These people had studied and memorized much of the Old Testament, yet Jesus makes this statement about them. This word that they supposedly knew so well had not taken root, and did not dwell in them. They could not see Jesus throughout the OT, yet that is the main thread that weaves throughout.
Luke 24:44 "... all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me." Philip explained these things to the eunuch - Luke 24:25-27. We too should be able to do this -- see "Christ in the OT.doc". Paul also did this in the cities he went to (Acts 17:1-13), and like their reaction to Jesus, they ignored the truth when they heard it from Paul.
This tells us that reading, studying, memorizing Scripture is not enough. These Jews searched the Scriptures, and yet did not find the truth, because they would not allow their heart and mind to accept it (Matt 23:25) (see verse 40). You must have a relationship with God through Jesus, and allow the Holy Spirit to teach you through them.
