Joshua 23:1 - Additional Comments
Joshua 23 and 24 are Joshua's farewell sermon to Israel, which Joshua preached just before his death. He dies at the end of Joshua 24. This is significant, since these were his last words - this shows more who he was than almost anything else. This is what he wanted to leave with the world, a summary of what he valued most. Notice its focus was not in the accomplishments, the conquests and the new land, but in what God had been doing, and how they are to go forward. What would you say or write as your final words to the next generation? Would you have something to say? If you could say something to the entire nation, what would you say? (Compare to how carefully we write e-mail if it goes to a lot of people, say at work.)
Now, why wait until years from now, when you are old? Aren't these the things you should be saying today?
Why does age convey wisdom? Is this true? The assumption is one learns as one ages. Is this true? How does a person increase in wisdom? Are you? (Psa 90:12, Psa 111:10, Prov 1:5-7)
Joshua was not only the political leader, but also the spiritual leader of the nation. What if Billy Graham, our perceived spiritual leader, were to give his last words? Would we listen? What would he say?
When did this take place? Joshua died at 110 years old. Moses was 40 when he fled the palace, 80 when he led Israel into the wilderness, and 120 when he died. Joshua was one of the spies sent to check out the Promised Land. Assuming he was about 40 when he did the spying, he would've been 80 when they entered the Promised Land, and therefore it's been 30 years since then. They may have battled the inhabitants for let's say 10 years. This would have given them 20 years of peace, and approximate time of the "long time" referred to here.
