Judges 6:1 - The Message

Yet again the People of Israel went back to doing evil in God’s sight. God put them under the domination of Midian for seven years. Midian overpowered Israel. Because of Midian, the People of Israel made for themselves hideouts in the mountains—caves and forts. When Israel planted its crops, Midian and Amalek, the easterners, would invade them, camp in their fields, and destroy their crops all the way down to Gaza. They left nothing for them to live on, neither sheep nor ox nor donkey. Bringing their cattle and tents, they came in and took over, like an invasion of locusts. And their camels—past counting! They marched in and devastated the country. The People of Israel, reduced to grinding poverty by Midian, cried out to God for help.

Judges 6:1 - Additional Comments

Israel once again turned from God and began worshipping idols. So God disciplines them by allowing the Midianites to come against His people. When the situation becomes oppressive, Israel cries out to God. As a result, God calls Gideon and empowers him to destroy the idols, defeat the Midianite, and call His people back to Himself.
Abraham was 20 years older than Sarah (Gen 17:17). Sarah died at 127 years old (Gen 23:1-2), so Abraham was 137 then. After Sarah died (Gen 24:67), Abraham's took Keturah as his second wife (Gen 25:1). The Midianites were descendents from Keturah's son Midian. They were gypsies and plunderers (taking crops, cattle, people).
Like Israel, God calls us to get rid of the idols in our lives, and calls us back to a right relationship with Him. Look at the list of the deeds of the flesh in Gal 5:19-21. Note that idolatry is listed there among other sins like adultery and murder. But God views them all the same.
Idolatry can be defined as "placing excessive value on anything outside of God and His ways, which is often revealed by how you react when that thing is removed or violated, or by spending excessive time or thoughts on that thing".
Selfishness can be idolatry, because it is revealed by how you react when your rights are removed or violated. In fact, it is probably the #1 idol that battles for our heart.
