Note the sons went in together, when it should have been one. And, they used common incense and common fire. And, they did it when God did not want them to. It also appears they did in a rash and careless fashion, and may have been drunk (see verse 9, which may have been mentioned as a result of this incident.) They did it not in ignorance, but in defiance, otherwise they would have been able to bring a sin offering (Lev 4:2-3).
King Uzziah also transgressed in a similar way (2 Chron 26:14-21), and had leprosy for the rest of his life.
Zacharias was a priest, and was burning incense according to the custom of the priesthood, when the angel came to him to tell him he would have a son (John the baptist). See Luke 1:5-13.
God in wisdom tells us how to worship Him. He can tell us what and how to worship. And in his justice He will revenge when He is not worshipped as prescribed.
Familiarity with their duties may have bred contempt of the divine Majesty. May we never take casually our relationship with God, and the things He has asked us to do. This can certainly lead to disobedience, by not caring what He says, either in His Word, or to us individually.
