See 2 Sam 7:11-13 and Isaiah 9:6-7. Mary was knowledgeable of the Old Testament laws and prophesies, for we see this in her praise in verses 46-55. It was probably at the moment in this verse that Mary realized what child this was she was carrying - the Messiah.
