All knew she was beyond child bearing years, so everyone saw that God had blessed her, and they rejoiced with her.
God had done a work in her life, and others saw that.
How do we react when we see God working in others' lives? Is it a time for rejoicing? Do you pay attention and see God working in lives around you? Does it thrill your heart when you see God having done a work in others' lives?
Who are the ones in whose lives God will work? Let's look at the lives of Zacharias & Elizabeth:
- They kept their relationship growing (verses 5-7); their faith did not rise and fall depending on circumstances (how often we let circumstances dictate our relationship with God!)
- Whatever God asked them to do, they listened for God, they heard God, and they did it (verses 5-7); their obedience was not dependent on what they felt God was doing for them (i.e. if God was blessing them, they served, if troubles arose, they served, etc.)
- He prayed regularly - both in his duties as a priest, but also for his wife, that she would bear a child (verses 8-9, 13). (In his priestly duties he probably was praying for the Messiah to come soon.) Rev 5:8 says the 24 elders who fell down before the Lamb were each carrying golden bowls of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.
- Be ready to believe, even though Zacharias did not (verses 18-20). Our faith is required to please God (Heb 11:6).
