Some of those who are false messiahs:
- Maitreya, the "world teacher", is expected to initiate his 'Day of Revealing' anytime now, and is reported to have been making a number of special appearances in third world countries.
- David Koresh, former leader of the Branch Davidian cult in Waco, Texas, believed he was the Lamb of Revelation 5 because he received revelations from God in how to interpret the seven seals needed to be broken in order to open the scroll. 75 people died in the inferno that ensued during the attempted takeover of the compound by the FBI and ATF on April 19, 1993.
- Sun Myung Moon, the Moonies, the Unification Church, and 'True Parents Organization', are all examples of Matt 24:5. Moon has claimed often to be God.
- Four thousand feet up into the mountains of Siberia a man in a red velvet robe, he calls himself Vissarion. He lives in a log cabin with a view and spends his days writing down his musings and painting oil canvasses. He says, I am Jesus Christ.
- Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson (April 18, 1902-June 12, 1994). Hasidism has been charged by other Orthodox Jews with creating a cult of personality since its inception. His followers had an extremely high level of devotion to him; they believed that he was infallible, and many proclaimed that he was the messiah.
- Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad said that the Holy Prophet Muhammad had brought the final, everlasting religion, law and scripture. So any truthful claimant sent by God could ONLY appear within the Islamic religion. And the work of any such claimant could ONLY be the defense and propagation of Islam (as taught in the Quran and by the Prophet Muhammad). Therefore Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad is a Messiah and Mahdi within Islam carrying forward the mission of the Prophet Muhammad, and being entirely subject to the authority of the Quran and Prophet Muhammad like any other Muslim. Mirza Ghulam Ahmad referred to himself as a "prophet" in his writings and claimed to be the second coming of Jesus. Hence this claim is abhorrent to most Muslims.
