Luke 22:6 - Additional Comments

I wonder what Judas was thinking. He clearly saw Jesus' miracles. Knowing Jesus' power, did he try to bring a showdown between the Romans and Jesus? Or, did he feel Jesus was losing power or influence or value? Was he tired of hearing what Jesus had to say, disillusioned that Jesus did not turn out to be what he was looking for when he started to follow Him? Was he truly just that selfish that he sold Jesus for the money, and didn't really care about truth or people?
We do know that Judas, even in the midst of Jesus ministry, had wrong motives, for he stole from the treasury (John 12:6).
We know some of what was on his mind, for Jesus, the One who knows what is in us, turned to him and said, "What you are about to do, do quickly." (John 13:27) And, this passage (John 13:27) says that Satan entered Judas, but Judas had already negotiated the betrayel before that.
The amazing thing is that someone can appear to agree and belong, but their mind and heart is far away (e.g. Jim Smith). Only God knows what's in the heart of each person. What is in your heart?
Henry David Thoreau said "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation." The fact is men become resigned in the lives they hold, for no one ever fully achieves their dreams. Whatever Judas dreamed of, he did not obtain it, in what he wanted from Jesus, nor what he wanted from the money.
Thoreau was right, for without Christ, this is what you are left with in life. Even with Christ, many men lead lives like this. They are sadly resigned to live the life they have. Have you ever been tempted to bolt, like Jay Carsey in "Exit the Rainmaker" ? It's been said that the more extreme the underlying despair, the more extreme the games or escapes.
What are your dreams? Is who you are and what you have a fulfillment of your dreams? What are your failed dreams? The great promise is that we can have peace beyond the understanding of men (Phil 4:6-7), through a solid relationship with God. This may be a litmus test for the quality of your relationship with God - how much underlying despair do you have? How much are you like the man Thoreau described? (How much are you like Judas, who did not get from Jesus what was so close, was within his grasp?)
