Most people operate on the basic "law of reciprocity" -- You do something nice for me, and in turn I will do something similar for you. See Matthew 7:12. Do to others as you would have them do to you, but be careful -- just because you are doing it to them, don't expect or demand that it be done also back to you. You should do it without needing a reward, but if you must, know that your reward will be in heaven.
How can we distinguish ourselves from those without Christ -- ignore the "law of reciprocity", and do good to others without need of payback, even if it's a thank you. Not only does this bring glory to God, but it also reflects His character.
