Mark 11:14 - Additional Comments

Jesus told a similar parable - Luke 13:6-9.
It was time for the fig tree to bear fruit, but it did not. It was the right time, and it looked like the tree was healthy, but there was no fruit. How many people are in church that look the part of a Christian, yet there is no fruit, especially when God calls at the appropriate time. Jesus shows His disdain for the fruitless tree, as He surely does to the fruitless follower of Christ.
And, what happens to a follower of Christ over time, with no fruit? Their heart becomes hardened, they have become blind, so they cannot in the future bear fruit - Rom 11:7-8, Rom 11:25. And thus, the tree dries up from its roots (vs 20).
When you hear "fruit" for a believer, what do you think of? There needs to be fruit in the personal time with God, which is mostly between the believer and God. There needs to be fruit in the character of the person - see notes on Gal 5:22-23. Then, there also needs to be fruit in other people's lives - 2 Tim 2:2.
