Apparently there had been a rebellion where some of the radical Jews had tried to overthrow the local Romans. Barabbas was probably not respected, but inwardly many of the Jews may have wanted him and his companions to succeed. The rebellion had murdered at least one person, and probably a Roman, so he and the rebels were detested by the Romans. The rebellion failed, and naturally Barabbas and his companions were sentenced to death. These prisoners were chained together, and located somewhat near Jesus and Pilate.
