Mark 5:1 - The Message

They arrived on the other side of the sea in the country of the Gerasenes. As Jesus got out of the boat, a madman from the cemetery came up to him. He lived there among the tombs and graves. No one could restrain him—he couldn’t be chained, couldn’t be tied down. He had been tied up many times with chains and ropes, but he broke the chains, snapped the ropes. No one was strong enough to tame him. Night and day he roamed through the graves and the hills, screaming out and slashing himself with sharp stones.

Mark 5:1 - Additional Comments

It was about a 6-7 mile trip across the Sea of Galilee. They now were on the east side of the sea, near the middle. They has crossed over, just as Jesus had intentioned (4:35), despite the storm they ran into (4:37), and their fear they would perish. Jesus was not going to die, and He was going to accomplish His purpose on earth. God will accomplish His intentions, no matter what challenges we see getting in the way.
About Gadarenes - Gadara was one of the Decapolis, or "Ten Cities," that were originally inhabited primarily by Greek people who settled in the region after the time of Alexander the Great's conquest. After the Romans occupied the region from about 65 B.C., Gadara was made the capital of the Roman province of Peraea. Gadara was located east of The Jordan River on a mountain about 6 miles / 10 kilometers south-east of The Sea Of Galilee. The people of Gadara were known as Gadarenes. They were still mostly Gentiles in the time of Christ, as indicated by their keeping of pigs (see 5:11). In more modern times, there have been accounts of unfortunate people again living in the tombs of Gadara just as the man with the unclean spirits did (5:3).
