Mark 7:21 - Additional Comments
Here is a good picture of what is naturally in the heart of all people, without the cleansing God brings. This is who we are without guards, without controls, without God. These are sin, and they lead to turmoil, pain, trouble. God wants us to be holy - 1 Pet 1:16 because it is written, "Be holy, for I am holy."
Check it out - do you recognize these in your own heart? Left unchecked, they will cause pain. How do you fight these? Focused prayer and study of the Bible.
- evil thoughts - any desires to do things to others that you know God would not want? this might be revenge, it might be sexual, it might be cheating, etc.
- adulteries - Jesus made it clear (Matt 5:27-28) that it is what you look at, what you think about, what you dwell on in your thoughts, what distracts you
- fornications - this is any sexual behavior unfitting, be it dressing provocatively, acting excessively flirty and without constraint, and of course inappropriate contact
- murders - Jesus made it clear (Matt 5:21-22) that it is your attitude towards others, not just what physical damage you do - anger, bitterness, hatred, mockings
- thefts - anything you take from others they would not allow you to have with their knowledge, be it possessions, time (from work), money (e.g. taxes)
- covetousness - unhealthy desire for what you don't have, be it money, status, job, friends, family (e.g. spouse), possessions, etc.
- wickedness - not caring about sin; general depravity; malice or ill will towards others
- deceit - craftiness, trickery, lying, deceiving, misleading
- lewdness - filthiness, either enjoying watching it, encouraging it in others, or your own involvement
- an evil eye - looking to cause problems or sin; looking for opportunities to sin
- blasphemy - any talk against God, or accepting others' talk against God; anything that takes away the honor of God
- pride - comparing yourself to others, either too high or too low; caring too much how you measure up, instead of caring how others are doing
- foolishness - making poor, unwise, unBiblical decisions; making decisions without regard to God, God's ways, or Scripture
Allow me to repeat - check it out - do you recognize these in your own heart? Left unchecked, they will cause pain and trouble. How do you fight these? Focused prayer and study of the Bible.
