But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.

Jesus probably took this approach for a couple of reasons - He was primarily focused on His ministry to the Jews at this point, and He wanted to reveal the faith of this lady.
