Mark 9:34 - Additional Comments

This should not seem odd. We are competitive, and we want the best. It is only God's teaching and His Spirit in us that compel us to do otherwise. Jesus "emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant" (Phil 2:7). When Peter argued with Jesus (Mark 8:32) that Jesus should not go to His death, Peter probably was still expecting Jesus to be the conquering Messiah, not the humble servant that He was. And so, their view of themselves aligned much in the way they viewed Jesus would eventually be, above others.
How do you get along with others? Don't talk but listen. Don't argue but let them win. Don't seek for yourself but give. Don't raise yourself, raise them. Don't seek love, but give love. The bottom line is, as God said, love Him and love others. 1 Cor 13:4-7 shows you how to do that.
