Matthew 1:1 - Additional Comments

The Gospel of Matthew is one of the four gospels. Matthew was one of the 12 apostles. The consensus among scholars is that this book in the Bible was written between 50 and 70 A.D. Matthew was a Jewish tax collector that left his profession to follow the Lord. Matthew gives a personal witness account of many miracles that Jesus performed prior to His death. The purpose of this book is to prove to readers that Jesus is the true Messiah that was prophesized in the Old Testament. It is an artistically written book. With 28 chapters, it is the longest Gospel of the four.

The genealogy is followed back to Abraham because Abraham is the father of the Jewish nation - that is where the nation began.
This describes the origins of Jesus as man, but certainly not the origins of Jesus as God. Christ existed from everlasting. for all things which are made were made through Him (John 1:1,3, 14). And, Micah 5:2 says Jesus' "goings forth are from of old, from everlasting."
Why give the genealogy? It was promised to Abraham that Christ should descend from him (Gen 12:3; Gen 22:18), and to David that he should descend from him (2 Sam 7:12; Psa 89:3-4, Psa 132:11); and therefore, unless it can be proved that Jesus is a son of David, and a son of Abraham, we cannot admit him to be the Messiah.
They who saw Jesus as the Christ, called to Him using the title the son of David - Matt 15:22; Matt 20:31; Matt 21:15.
