In all likelihood, Jonah was not in the belly of the fish for 3 24-hour periods, but a part of 3 days. If the nights were being counted, it probably would have referred to 4 days and 3 nights, or some such.. The Greek word (like the Jewish word) nychtheai indicated a day and a night as one object. So, Jesus was in the heart of the earth a part of three nychtheai, or a part of three days and three nights, i.e. a part of 3 24-hour periods.
