Matthew 16:14 - Additional Comments
- John the Baptist - Josephus records that Herod's army was destroyed and that many felt it was a just vengeance for his treatment of John. They were thinking also that Jesus was John coming back from the dead.
- Elijah - Malachi 4:5-6 says Elijah would be coming. Elijah was to pave the way of the Christ - some thought Jesus was merely paving the way for the Messiah. They did not think the Messiah would come in this way, so it must only be Elijah. To the expectation that Elijah would soon return, Jesus said this was fulfilled in John the Baptist (Matt. 17:10-13).
- Jeremiah - Jeremiah was a prophet of judgment, declaring God's impending doom on His own people (Jeremiah 1:9-10). Jesus could fit that role.
- One of the prophets - job of a prophet - bring God to people; job of priest - bring people to God. See John 6:14.
Many today say Jesus was a great prophet, a great teacher, or just a great moralist, but they stop short of acknowledging who He really was - God as a human.
