Matthew 26:28 - Additional Comments

Christ could set in place this ordinance, as God set aside the seventh day (Gen 2:3). God, and Jesus, can set things in place to honor themselves. Anyone else, it would be vanity.
Jesus transformed the Passover into a celebration of a far greater deliverance. The Lord's Supper reminds us of our spiritual and permanent deliverance from sins.
What is the new covenant?
- In the O.T. God made a covenant with Israel that was sealed with blood (Ex. 24:8).
- This was a covenant to make them a holy nation (cleansed from sin) and a kingdom of Priests (Exo 19:6).
- The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless (Heb 7:18).
o Heb 7:19 (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.
o Heb 8:7 if there was nothing wrong with that first no need for another.
o Heb 8:8 But God said : "The time is coming, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and Judah. (Jer. 31:31)
- The new covenant is better because it would permanently remove sin.
o Heb 10:11 every priest stands offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.
o Heb 10:5 Therefore, when He came into the world, He said: "Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, But a body You have prepared for Me.
- The new sacrifice is for all, instead of those who brought the sacrifice.
o Heb 10:10 we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
- The new covenant is better because His intercession is unending and complete.
o Heb 7:23 death prevented former priests from continuing in office;
o Heb 7::24 but Jesus lives forever - has a permanent priesthood.
o Heb 7:25 His intercession is unending, therefore He always lives to intercede for us.
o Heb 7:27 Unlike priests repeated yearly, He sacrificed for their sins once for all.
- The old couldn't completely cleanse our sin.
" Heb 9:9 the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshiper.
" Heb 9:10 They are only external regulations applying until the time of the new order.
" Heb 9:13 only sanctified them so that they are outwardly clean.
- Jesus inwardly cleanses our sin
" Heb 9:14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!
