Here was their call into ministry. They had been spending time with Jesus (see note on vs 18), but had not yet been called.
They had already acknowledge Jesus as Rabbi (John 1:38). Rabbis have students that study under them, and here was their invitation to do just that with Jesus. What an invitation! They accepted (vs 20).
Living with Jesus meant they would learn by more than just what He said, but they would learn by what He did.
We, too, can become a disciple of the Rabbi, by taking time with Him. He asks us to (John 12:26, Matt 16:24, Matt 11:29). And that is the only way to learn from Him - don't think that you can be a disciple, a learner, without taking time with Him.
