Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.

This passage asks the question - What are your inner motives which govern your external acts of righteousness?
In Matthew 5:20 Jesus says their acts must exceed the righteous acts of the religious leaders. Really what He was asking is not really for the works themselves, but the motivation behind the works. God knows what is truly in our hearts (Luke 16:15), and we must know that what's in our hearts will be revealed (Luke 12:2).
