Matthew 6:7

King James Version (KJV)

But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

Translations

Matthew 6:7 - Amplified Bible

And when you pray, do not heap up phrases (multiply words, repeating the same ones over and over) as the Gentiles do, for they think they will be heard for their much speaking. [I Kings 18:25-29.]

Matthew 6:7 - American Standard Version

Matthew 6:7 - Bible in Basic English

Matthew 6:7 - Darby Bible

But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as those who are of the nations: for they think they shall be heard through their much speaking.

Matthew 6:7 - English Standard Version

Matthew 6:7 - King James Version

Matthew 6:7 - La Biblia de las Americas

Y al orar, no uséis repeticiones sin sentido, como los gentiles, porque ellos se imaginan que serán oìdos por su palabrerìa.

Matthew 6:7 - The Message

"The world is full of so-called prayer warriors who are prayer-ignorant. They’re full of formulas and programs and advice, peddling techniques for getting what you want from God. Don’t fall for that nonsense. This is your Father you are dealing with, and he knows better than you what you need. With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. Like this:

   Our Father in heaven,
   Reveal who you are.
   Set the world right;
Do what’s best— as above, so below.
Keep us alive with three square meals.
Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others.
Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil.
   You’re in charge!
You can do anything you want!
   You’re ablaze in beauty!
      Yes. Yes. Yes.

Matthew 6:7 - New American Standard Bible

"And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words.

Matthew 6:7 - Nueva Biblia Latinoamericana de Hoy

"Y al orar, no usen ustedes repeticiones sin sentido, como los Gentiles, porque ellos se imaginan que serán oìdos por su palabrerìa.

Matthew 6:7 - World English Bible

In praying, don`t use vain repetitions, as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their much speaking.

Matthew 6:7 - Young's Living Translation

`And -- praying -- ye may not use vain repetitions like the nations, for they think that in their much speaking they shall be heard,

Matthew 6:7 - Additional Comments

It's not repetition that is being condemned - it's *vain* repetition, repetition for the wrong purposes. Actually, repetition is encouraged - Luke 11:5-10.
God doesn't need to be reminded of our need, but we need to be reminded that He is the giver of all things.
