The Festival of Booths (Succoth) (Lev 23:42), aka Sukkot, was commanded by to remind them of how they lived in temporary dwellings during the exodus from Egypt. It is during the time of harvest, and is a celebration of freedom from slavery. The Jews are to celebrate by living in booths (a special type of hut) during the 7 days. This starts 5 days after Yom Kippur.
This Festival is also called Festival of Tabernacles, but "booths" more accurately describes the structure, being a temporary one.
Some texts (Exodus 23:16, 34:22) also refer to it as the Festival of Ingathering, as a celebration of the harvest.
It is a time of Joy because it celebrates freedom from slavery and the hardships of that life.
