Actually, the people had requested this (Deut. 1:21-24). God had already told them they would possess this land (Deut 1:8). But the people asked for the spies to "search out the land for us, and bring back word to us of the way by which we should go up, and of the cities into which we shall come.'" .God agreed to the spying on Canaan. In His request, He said (verse 2) that He was going to give that land to Israel. There was no question, it was matter of fact. May we see God's promises to us in this light.
Their answer came back very different from what they requested.
