Proverbs 17:17 - Additional Comments

At all times? Do your friends know that there is never a time when you can't be counted on? In good time, in bad, for either person. This is a person you can depend on.
If a person has friendships because of what they can get out of the relationship, as soon as they are no longer being fed, they are gone. Friendships need to be based on giving, not getting. Otherwise, your affection will change with the wind.
Christ was a friend to the end (John 13:1, Rom 8:35,38-39), for true love will never fail (1 Cor 13:8).
Some friends come and go as there is a need, even if it is companionship. These are "swallow friends" - they are there in summer but gone in winter.
We are born, as Esther, "for such a time as this" (Esther 4:14). God placed us in our family for many reasons, one being to be there for family members during adversity. Of course, sometimes stepping away is the best support. But sometimes aggressive support is needed. Be careful to do what your family needs.
May we rise about the natural tendency, and be friends with those in our family. Are there any family members that you have strained relationships with? God wants those to heal, and even go to the point of being rich. See notes on Gen 32:4.
We need to teach our children to be friends, to always support each other. It will set a great foundation for life. See notes on Gen 27:41.
Do you have any brothers that will be there in your times of adversity? Are you a brother that will be there when others have a time of adversity?
See notes on Prov 18:24.
