Proverbs 6:16 - Additional Comments

God hates sin, all sin, and nothing but sin. But these sins listed here are particularly odious to God. These all involve injury to others, to those He loves. The one who practices these things will have sudden ruin (vs 15).
Each of these sins has great disregard for God and His will. What God hates:
- Pride (Ps 101:5; Prov 21:4); pride places self at the throne and displaces God; this violates 'there is no other god' commndment (Ex 20:3)
- Lying (Ps 120:2-4); next to pride, nothing is more odious; lying breaks trust, and without trust and work you could do for God is severly handicapped; the devil is the father of lies (John 8:44)
- Murder (Isaiah 1:15); another command, Ex 20:13; lying and murder are the traits of the devil (John 8:44); also, this is the same sin as when you hate anothers (Matt 5:21-22);
- Planning evil (Ps 36:4; e.g..Jer 18:18; Mark 14:1,43-46); this disregards anything the Holy Spirit might be trying to say to the person, and disregards God; this is planning and purposely doing things against God's will
- Going to evil (Isa 59:7; e.g. 2 Kings 5:20-27); whether in the heart (planning evil) or in action, both go directly against God
- False witness (Ps 27:12; Prov 19:5,9; e.g. Matt 26:59-66 ); when asked for the truth, you knowlingly return a lie, even though you have promised to tell the truth; lying is listed twice, showing God's great hate of it
- Sows discord (Prov 6:14; e.g. 1 Cor 1:11-13; Jude 3-4,16-19); this brings sin between others, so you are not only sinning yourself, but raising sin in others
