The preface - (A Prayer of the Afflicted, when he is faint, and pours out his complaint) (before the LORD.)
The anonymous writer of this psalm experienced hard times in his life, and he wrote about them. He was afflicted in body and in spirit. However, in the midst of it, he knew he could turn to God for help and understanding.
This psalm is one of five psalms specifically identified in its heading as a prayer (in addition to Psalms 17, 86, 90, and 142).
Old Testament scholars classify this psalm as both an individual lament and a penitential psalm.
This psalm is one of 50 anonymous psalms. We do not know who he was, where he lived, who his enemies were, nor what his disease was.
What is strange about this request of his, that God would hear His prayer? God always hears our prayers, but it doesn't always feel like it (see vs 2).
