And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal.

A furlong is 220 yards, which is 1/8 of a mile.
Twelve thousand furlongs (1500 miles) - Not in circumference, but on each of the four sides. Jerusalem was thirty three furlongs in circumference; Alexandria thirty in length, ten in breadth. Nineveh is reported to have been four hundred furlongs round; Babylon four hundred and eighty. But these villages would hardly be noticed would they be compared to the new Jerusalem! By this measure a city is understood to be great. With the exact proportion of every part of it described; this shows, figuratively, that this city was prepared for a great number of inhabitants.
