Romans 12:6 - The Message

If you preach, just preach God’s Message, nothing else; if you help, just help, don’t take over; if you teach, stick to your teaching; if you give encouraging guidance, be careful that you don’t get bossy; if you’re put in charge, don’t manipulate; if you’re called to give aid to people in distress, keep your eyes open and be quick to respond; if you work with the disadvantaged, don’t let yourself get irritated with them or depressed by them. Keep a smile on your face.

Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, {each of us is to exercise them accordingly:} if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith;

Romans 12:6 - Additional Comments

The Greek word for "gifts" here (and 1 Peter 4:10) is charisma. This is related to the Greek term charis, meaning grace. Paul is using this term to indicate that these gifts are a result of grace - they are a free, undeserved gift from God.
The gifts are for Christians (verse 5), and every Christian has been given gifts (1 Cor 12:7).
How do you get the gifts? From the Spirit - 1 Cor 12:11.
Can you receive more gifts after becoming a Christian? Yes - 1 Cor 12:31, 14:1.
How does the Spirit determine what to give? It is partially based on the depth of our faith ("the proportion of our faith").
What are the gifts? See 1 Cor 12:11-27.
