Romans 5:12 - The Message

You know the story of how Adam landed us in the dilemma we’re in— first sin, then death, and no one exempt from either sin or death. That sin disturbed relations with God in everything and everyone, but the extent of the disturbance was not clear until God spelled it out in detail to Moses. So death, this huge abyss separating us from God, dominated the landscape from Adam to Moses. Even those who didn’t sin precisely as Adam did by disobeying a specific command of God still had to experience this termination of life, this separation from God. But Adam, who got us into this, also points ahead to the One who will get us out of it.

because of this, even as through one man the sin did enter into the world, and through the sin the death; and thus to all men the death did pass through, for that all did sin;

Romans 5:12 - Additional Comments

People need to realize how severe one sin is - it taints all. There is no turning back; the one drop of poison has entered the water. People who think they can somehow remove sins by what they do are mistaken (Rom 3:20).
Today people all over the world are trying to cover their sins by doing good or by keeping the regulations of their religion. They attempt to ease their sinful consciences and absolve their guilt by performing religious rituals and good deeds (e.g. during the 40 days of Ramadan). They pray, fast, give to the poor and so on. Yet deep inside they still feel guilty. That is because they still are guilty!
Plus, they don't realize how full of sin they are without God's intervention (Rom 3:10-18).
What was the result of Adam's one sin? Death spread to all men. That is how God views sin!! And yet we think so little of it when we sin, and God is so repulsed it causes our death (without Jesus' intervention). We need to truly realize how great is this grace that God has given us through the death of Jesus.
