There are 2 universal laws at work here. One is "the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus". The other is "the law of sin and death". Verses 1-11 compare these.
One law gives life, the other death. We are under the law of death without Christ, and have no choice but that fate. But with Christ, we are free from that law and that fate, and are given life. This is one of the freedoms we have in Christ (Gal 5:1).
