It is probable that Jesus went to the temple to preach in the morning, when he sent Peter and John another way into the city to prepare the passover. While some are attending to spiritual matters, it is also God's will that some are attending to earthly matters. Earthly businesses can be God ordained and blessed just as much as spiritual ones.
Note that, when they were in the upper room, there was no one else present. Peter and John found the lamb, sacrificed it, cooked it, and brought it to the upper room. They also brought the unleavened bread, drinks (wine), and anything else for the supper, like utensils to cut the lamb, and plates to eat on. They set the meal out so they all could eat. See also vs 13.
