1 Thessalonians 5:8 - Additional Comments

1 Pet 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
1 Pet 5:9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.
Our spiritual enemies are many, and mighty, and malicious. But their leader is the devil, Satan. It is best to understand your enemy when you must battle against him - and we each have a battle with Satan, even though we often forget that it is a real battle.
What do we read about the devil?
- Acts 5:3 - The devil had filled the heart of Ananias to lie. The devil had so influenced him that his heart was full of deception. The devil can fill people's hearts.
- Matt 4:1,3,11 - The devil has a physical presence. He came to tempt Jesus, and after his defeat he left Jesus.
- Matt 13:24-30,36-40 - The devil is planting tares, non-believers, to live side-by-side with believers, at at the end will burn in the fire.
- Matt 25:40-41 - The everlasting fire is prepared for the devil and his angels, in effect for all who follow him
- John 8:39-44 - You either have God as your Father, or the devil as your father, even if you don't realize it. The devil is a murderer. The devil is a liar, and the father of lies. He is the one who generates lies, who gives the ideas for lies. God is the father of truth, and hates lies (Prov 6:16-19).
- Eph 4:26-27 - We are told to give no place in our life, in our heart, to the devil. Give him no room. We have the example of Jesus during his fast, when the devil tempted him. (What are ways we give room to the devil?) How do we withstand him? See the next verse (Eph 6:11).
- Eph 6:11 - (see notes on this verse) We are to put on the full armor of God to withstand the attacks of the devil.
- James 4:7 - (see notes on this verse) Wow, the devil will flee from us if we resist him, if we truly make an effort to block him out. God will work this for us - the devil will flee.
- 1 John 3:8-10 - All sin is of the devil. The devil has sinned since the beginning of the age, probably since the creation of the universe. Jesus purpose in coming is to destroy the works of the devil.
- Rev 12:4,9 - The Devil, aka Satan, aka the great dragon, aka the serpent of old, is one and the same. His goal is to deceive all, to trick all. He was in heaven, but was cast to the earth, and his angels with him (1/3 of all angels).
- Rev 20:2,10 - The devil will be bound for a thousand years. Then, he will be thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where he will be tormented continuously forever.
